What Does Fortune Do in Minecraft?

November 25, 2021November 25, 2021

In Minecraft, applying the Fortune enchantment on your Axe, hoe, pickaxe, or shovel increases the number of objects dropped by a block and, in certain circumstances, increases the probability of specific items falling. This has no effect on the experience orbs that are dropped. Let’s start with the article – What Does Fortune Do in Minecraft.

What is Fortune?

Some variations of the Fortune enchantment change the number of drops from the block depending on whether the block you are standing on or directly above is golden. For example, a block of black stone that is directly above a gold block will drop the gold item most frequently, and a block of black stone directly below a gold block will drop the gold item only rarely.

The type of block you are standing on, directly above or below, does not affect the chance of the blocks dropping an item.

  • Using the Inferno Chest in Multiplayer

With your game updated to version 0.15.2, you can now create, open, and loot the Inferno Chest, which is a standard chest with special cosmetic enchantments.

The Purpose of the Fortune Enchantment

Most of the time, you will find that a Fortune enchantment will not increase the drop rate of items, but you will find it effective for situations when you are just far enough away from the area that it is not reasonable to start throwing items. For example, when you are not in range of a wall or a ledge, this can be extremely helpful for selling items.

It may also be useful in situations where you can’t drop a lot of items from a point that is very far away from an item-drop point, like a chest in the middle of a deep ravine or a mountain. This is because the “Far Away from Drop Point” setting affects the drop rate of items, but it does not affect the probability of an item dropping.

When Should You Use It?

If you are working to increase the number of experience orbs you’re getting on every item you collect, Fortune will help you get your way there more efficiently. In this mode, most of your experience orbs come from socketing rare engrams on weapons.

Fortune will also give you more experience when you mine purple and red items. This will help you open orbs that drop purple and red orbs faster. In the final week of Season 3, this can help you open enough purple and red clusters to get the rare engrams they’re worth.

Note that this enchantment is not the same as Treasure Hunter Fortune, which uses a different system.

How Does It Work?

Fortunes do not work in the game, but it is possible to activate a Fortune in a separate thread.

Fortunes work by letting you collect the items dropped by an item (or a specific item) that is placed onto a block below yours (or above it) with your Axe, pickaxe, or shovel. These items drop far less frequently than they do on the surface of the world, which makes them a very popular way of making a lot of money very quickly.

In the case of the picks, this doesn’t increase the chances of any given item to drop; the drop rate is calculated before you place the item on the block. With an Axe, the chance is 0.0235%. With a pickaxe, it’s 0.0296%. This adds payout if you choose to use a pickaxe.

For the shovel, the chance is 0.0021% and with a pick, it’s 0.0125%.

Conclusion

We hope you enjoyed learning about What Does Fortune Do in Minecraft and its effects. As you’ve seen, different enchantments have very different benefits and use cases. Don’t worry about being lost – there are resources to help you along!
